Wax DBanj Deliver Petition to Nigerian Finance Minister

EDITOR’S NOTE

That artists are a strong force to reckon with is no longer news. Those who thought using them to market ideas and campaigns did not make a mistake. Rather, they scored a great victory by doing so. TIPTOPSTARS has always stood on the side of the productivity of artists. By productivity here, we mean how music and the people who sing it can be transformed into great assets to society. The strength of musical lyrics can never be quantified – it is way too strong to imagine. That’s just how it is and blessed are artist who are awake of this, for, they’d make bigger strides by grabbing the God-given opportunity to use music to better society. With Wax Dey, Fally Ipupa, D’Banj joining their voices at the US-Africa summit, something great is definitely coming Africa’s way. If you love their music and them, love what they are bent on doing for Africa, development-speaking!

PRESS RELEASE : WAX DEY, D’BANJ, FALLY IPUPA AND MORE ATTEND US-AFRICA

SUMMIT IN WASHINGTON

Washington, USA (03 August 2014) - Cameroon's Wax Dey alongside other artists including

Nigeria’s Femi Kuti and D’Banj, South Africa’s Judith Sephuma and DR Congo’s Fally Ipupa as well

as international soccer star Yaya Toure, are set to attend the historic US-Africa Leaders Summit to be

held in Washington D.C. from 4-7 August. They will be joining the ONE Campaign and will play an

active role in shaping the conversation about the US-Africa relationship.

The artists will hold advocacy meetings with high-level US officials, Washington Fellows from the

Obama administration’s Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI), and Members of Congress. They will

also perform during a ONE-hosted celebration to be held on 04 August at the Newseum.

President Barack Obama will welcome leaders from across the African continent to the nation’s

capital for the three-day summit, marking the largest gathering any U.S. president has ever held with

African heads of state and government. The summit aims to strengthen ties between the United

States and Africa, one of the world’s most dynamic and fastest growing regions.

These artists represent a portion of a larger group, led by D’banj, who came together earlier this year

during the official African Union Year of Agriculture to record the number one hit song, ‘Cocoa ‘na

Chocolate’ in support of ONE’s pro-agriculture campaign in Africa, ‘Do Agric, It pays.’

Their collaboration and advocacy work tapped into the dynamic African youth culture, prompting more

than 2 million African citizens to take action and sign ONE’s ‘Do Agric’ petition. The US summit takes

place only weeks after June’s African Union Heads of State and Government Summit in Malabo,

Equatorial Guinea where leaders heeded the call of the petition signers in the Malabo Declaration,

pledging to increase investments in agriculture, double agriculture production, and create millions of

agribusiness opportunities for its large youth population.

Speaking about the artists’ involvement in the historic summit, Dr. Sipho S. Moyo, Africa Director for

ONE, said: “These amazing artists and soccer star Yaya Toure represent a new era of hope, where

Africans take responsibility for their own destiny. They will also be meeting with American policy

makers to strengthen our ties and ensure that African citizens are taking an active role in writing the

continent’s next chapter. For a summit whose theme is ‘Investing in the Next Generation,’ these ONE

ambassadors truly are the next generation of African leaders.”

ONE launched the ‘Do Agric’ campaign in January in support of the official 2014 African Union Year of

Agriculture. Growth in agriculture in Sub-Saharan Africa today is estimated to be 11 times more

powerful at reducing poverty than growth in other sectors such as mining and utilities.

The continent-wide campaign urged African leaders in the months ahead of the AU meeting in Malabo

that the time had come to adopt better agricultural policies that will help tackle youth unemployment,

boost the productivity of African small holder farmers, and help lift millions of Africans out of extreme

poverty.

“Pound of Flesh pricked my adrenaline” - Merlisa Determined, international actress
Ernest Kanjo PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 05 August 2014 14:22

858706 232410800287632 930267356732318031 o A boisterous performing artist whose passionate approach to doing her job largely explains her success! It would be exact to describe the indefatigable Merlisa Determined this way. That she has been awake since the start of this year practicing the art she is divinely meant for is no exaggeration. As we write, the international actress is gearing towards the end of her sixth movie filming job in 2014. The latest two were even filmed simultaneously and at press time when TIPTOPSTARS spoke to the actress, Merlisa was still filled with energy and sounding (as usual) as though she was ready to return to set. That’s the Merlisa we know. Prior to the last two movies she just filmed, the star in Don Okolo’s Page 36 and Kelechi Eke’s award-winning False Engagement did what will surely turn out to be 2014’s most daring Nollywood movie produced in the USA – Pound of Flesh. Produced by Nkem DenChukwu and directed by Don Okolo, Pound of Flesh is one of the professional assignments that set its lead actress on an inexplicable emotional journey that lasted for as long as the filming went. “I had an adrenaline rush getting to the end of the story,” Merlisa told us. Ahead of the movie’s premiere, coming up on Saturday August 23, 2014 in Texas, we cornered the talented movie actress to recall her moments on this much-awaited production. She spoke to editor Ernest Kanjo from Houston. Excerpts!

Ernest Kanjo (EK): You are currently awaiting the release of Pound of Flesh in which you are starring. Are you anxious as August the 23rd, the day of the premiere approaches?

Merlisa Determined (MD): I’m more excited than anxious to see the hard work of the entire cast and crew come alive on the big screen. We spent long hours working on set, day in, day out, encouraging each other just because we wanted this movie to be a great success.

EK: We saw you quite joyous in gorgeous wedding robes - we saw in mourning outfit, sobbing - we saw some fire blast scenes and this tells us Pound of Flesh was a huge assignment for you….

MD: Well you know Ernest Pound of Flesh is a film that was inspired by a true life tragedy. The writer witnessed this incident and built the story around it. When I received this script, I was hooked, to be honest and couldn't put it down. I had an adrenaline rush getting to the end of the story. The lead character I portrayed in this story really pushed and forced me to go places that I hadn't yet explored as an actor. There were so many different emotions wrapped up in this one character. This film literally took me on an emotional roller coaster ride in every sense of the word.

EK: You have other movies with the producers of this one, but I’d imagine Pound of Flesh was a whole different experience – what made it unique?

MD: Yes, I have completed two other projects with Street Corner Films, that is Page 36 and Gem of the Rainforest. Each of them is unique in their own respect, just like each of the characters I portrayed. But what made Pound of Flesh so unique is, like I stated earlier, the true life nature of the story. Also, some of the filming locations of the movie were captivating.

EK: What character are you playing in this movie and did you enjoy playing it?

MD: With the highly anticipated release of the Pound of Flesh, fans will get to see Merlisa in a new light this year. I’m portraying a grieving mother who struggles to forgive the man who took the life of her daughter.

EK: Would you say you did well and even better this time as a lead in Pound of Flesh?

MD: Good performance becomes contagious when you have a strong team of wonderfully talented people working with. So you keep pushing and pushing yourself to the limit to achieve that like great performance. You can then walk away at the end of a project knowing hands-on-chest for having done a good job.

EK: What did producer and director tell you this time?

MD: They simply expressed the confidence they have always had in me to breathe life into this character. Honestly, Ernest I believe they were well pleased and satisfied with the job of the entire cast and crew working on this project. Don did a marvelous job writing and directing this movie while Nkem whom I describe as the glue of the project was simply awesome. They remain a dynamic duo.

EK: What was
10296081 238737289654983 4549722351418734517 o your experience with members of the cast and crew you were working with for the first time?

MD: Pleasant, I must say Ernest! There were like three actors I've had the pleasure to work with in other projects. I love being around actors who share the same passion as I do. It’s always good working with new talents. I believe you can always learn and bounce ideas off each other.

EK: What are you telling potential viewers of Pound of Flesh – any promises?

MD: Hahahahaha! Promises? Let me not make any at least for now. Howver , I’d say Pound of Flesh is a story you can't afford to miss - very emotional and heartfelt storyline! Imagine the agony of a mother witnessing her daughter in a burning car reaching out, crying, screaming out to her parents for help but they can't save her. Ernest, this is a film that will pull at your heart. It will keep you at the edge of your seat.

EK: What are the projects you have in the pipeline?

MD:Right now I have a few more movie projects that I’m currently working on. I have Temp to Fire and Unusual Twist. I have also completed projects such as Brides War 3X, Silent Retreat, All Things Unholy and so on. These movies will soon be released.

EK: Thanks for talking to us Merlisa!

MD: Ernest, it’s always a pleasure!

TV series: Find extra pleasure in savouring Bara Extravaganza

baraWhen TIPTOPSTARS contacted a fervent viewer of Cameroonian movies to find out what she thought about Bara Extravaganza, she was positive. “The first two episodes I’ve watched tell me the series is one every TV viewer in this country should go for,” she told us. “It’s quite promising and I’m convinced Bara Extravaganza will turn out to be one of those Latin American series we were fond of savouring some years back on national television,” Chantal said insistently.

As we write, programme schedulers on Cameroon’s leading TV channel, Canal 2 International are bracing to slot in episode 4 of the latest Cameroonian telefilm that comes up this Wednesday at 7pm Cameroon time (+1 GMT)

Shot in 22 episodes so far, Bara Extravaganza explores themes such greed, corruption, envy, love, etc. “These are some of the social vices common in the day-to-day lives of Cameroonians in particular and Africans in general,” executive producer Irine Bara told us. “We hope the lessons drawn from this series will have a tremendous impact on our society,” she said further.

According to the executive producer of Bara Extravaganza, the series is packaged in such a way that serious issues are comically presented. This means that prominent actors such as Irine Bara, Nchifor Valery, Adel Dikana, Kesha Kena, Ruth Nkwenti and others went an extra mile to make the production a great one.

With Pamela Ndukong (also doubling as actor in the series) as producer , Bara Extravaganza is a Bara Homeland Entertainment (Bahome) production, edited by Achille Brice and directed by Mbole Denis.

Latest movie: Realtor’s greed unveiled in The Greedy Realtor
Ernest Kanjo PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 30 July 2014 13:34

real Tiptopstars The endless challenges faced by tenants (many of whom are financially unable to erect their own edifices) is one of the issues African filmmakers have addressed in their works, in a bid to prick the consciences of real estate shot callers. The at times, unruly attitude of landlords, apartment managers and other people directly or indirectly connected with managing tenants’ problems motivate filmmakers to present the situation on the screens, if at all it would mean a thing to the former. Blaise Christian Sitchet is one of those movie makers whose observation of greedy estate managers has been well enough to necessitate a representation of the said issue in the movies. His The Greedy Realtor is thus the catchy piece of cinematographic work that tells the ugly story of situation.

Shot in the USA, The Greedy Realtor is set to hit public space as from Saturday, August 2, 2014. “I can’t wait to watch this movie whose theme is of great concern to our community. I trust it will be as interesting as Sitchet’s other movies,” a Maryland-based African movie lover told TIPTOPSTARS at press time.

Within the Cameroonian film industry, anxiety has risen as producer Sitchet’s colleagues await The Greedy Realtor. “I can’t afford to meet the art of our own Blaise Christian Sitchet,” producer Benedette Keyi Jeff simply mentioned. “Lilian Ndi, producer of Sister Dearest and Akim Macauley, director of Ekei will be present at The Greedy Realtor premiere,” filmmaker Akim Macauley wrote, announcing their eminent presence at the movie premiere this Saturday.

All roads therefore lead to Baltimore from where The Greedy Realtor will officially see the light of light. Organizers say the event which is expected to be a crowd puller will take place at the Park School Theatre, 2425 Old Court RD, Baltimore, MD, 21208. The red carpet event begins at 6pm eastern time.

Produced by Prestige International Films Productions, The Greedy Realtor is directed by El Vis (VIS 3K), featuring Blaise Christian Sitchet, Clara Fernaldo, Wendy Bangura, Ralph Maunello, Denis Cheseldine, Benedette Key Irogho, Louiza Tatah, Ngando Black, Betsi Betselot, Crystal Beauty and others. The movie comes after Koming From Afrika by the same producer.

Upcoming: Victimized set for filming

ken ngamne TIPTOPSTARSIn the coming months, the film industry in Cameroon will proudly be one movie richer, when Victimized would get into circulation. At press time, producer Ken Ngamne Shally Monette was putting things together to leave for location in Maryland. “All is almost set for the kick off,” the Minesota-based told TIPTOPSTARS. Ngamne who doubles as writer of the story will be joined by a huge team of actors and technicians once he arrives in MD for the filming of this upcoming movie observers already say will be a great hit.

According to the production team, once the cast and crew get on location, they will settle down for serious work. “We intend to make Victimized a palatable piece, reason why we will bury our heads in the projects and give out the give of ourselves in every aspect of production,” Ngamne told Afrikka Radio’s African Cocktail with Ernest Kanjo earlier.

The writer of The Storm, (another movie written by award-winning Ken Ngamne Shally Monette and released earlier this year) told us that Victimized is a well crafted story meant to deeply touch the hearts of those who will eventually watch the movie. It tells the story of a beautiful young lady Lillian Monono, who comes from a very rich family, but, has to go through the hustles of life, after she lost both parents in a ghastly car crash. Faced with obvious challenges, she has to make some quick and rash decisions, in order to free herself from the web in which she is trapped. But, did she make the best decisions about her problems? What would she have done, and how would she have reacted differently? Is she to blame for the directions she decided to follow? Did she really do it? Answers to these questions are found in the story that will be translated into an 80-minute-long cinematographic piece which will be directed by Ephraim Chiejina.e. Onyemaechi of the Directors’ Guild of Nigeria (DGN).
The Espoir Productions Studios movie (with Mat Atugon as Executive Producer) will be released in September 2014. Featruing in Victimized are renowned actors including Ken Shally Monette Ngamne, Desarray Ay, Mat Atugon, Paula Obaseki, Syl Amin, Bertini Heumegni, Eyong Jose, Sir Ryan and others.

Meanwhile, the producer of Victimized is a 2014 Nollywood and African Film Critics’ nominee from the movie The Storm. Directed by Obed Joe and produced by Emmanuel Takusi.
