It may take longer than expected for dust to settle on the September 27, 2014 premiere of DECODED, a Cameroonian movie with a mixed cast, produced by Gold Age Entertainment and directed by Akim Macauley. Organizers fashioned it in such a way that it would last long, not only on the minds of guests who physically showed up at the Douala Bercy, but movie lovers and observers who followed the event from afar.
“Amazing premiere!”Adeline Sede Kamga simple put it. The Douala-based publisher of FabAfriq Magazine was one of the frontline Cameroonian entertainment promoters present at the red carpet movie premiere. To the young publisher, the pump that characterized the official outing of DECODEDwas a clear indication that the sense of good organization was fast becoming the order of the day within the Cameroonian entertainment circles.
Observing from London, the publisher of Africally Speaking, yet another renowned magazine simply said the premiere was “a nice one”. Ngum Ngafor, just like TV host and writer Joan Ngomba were amazed. The latter whose TV show DECODED sounds like a twin with the movie that was being premiered told TIPTOPSTARS that she was glad the event went on successfully. “TIPTOPSTARS did a great job by letting us followed it live online,” she remarked from her Lagos abort.
The movie’s director who was unavoidably absent from the event couldn’t hide his positive feelings after learning Decoded had a befitting reception. From his Maryland, USA base, Akim Macauley expressed it in just three strong words: “Cameroon got talents.”
At home just like abroad, reactions have been streaming in. Some observers have even dared to say the Douala Bercy event was diametrically opposing to the impression scores of Cameroonian have about the country’s film industry which is generally negative. “Many more of such well organized events would shoot the industry in the skies,” Blaise, a movie lover who drove from Buea to attend the event told TIPTOPSTARS.
Meanwhile, the event was a make-shift roundabout of a cream of Cameroonian filmmakers and actors including the indefatigable Agbor Gilbert Ebot, CFI Vice chair Brenda Elung Shey (doubling as executive producer of Decoded), Jeffery Epule (lead actor), Solange Yijika (lead actress), Desmond Wyte, Nchifor Valery, Adel Dikana, etc.
Perhaps, the events foreign guest, Ghanaian actor Van Vicker who is also starring in Decoded was another major attraction. Vicker’s presence naturally provided more colour to the September 27 movie premiere. “I’m proud of you all and would love to work with you more and more,” the Ghanaian movie icon who has made great strides in Nollywood said.
Amongst other exciting items on the event’s agenda was a display of Cameroonian attire in a fashion parade and screening of the movie. “It is a masterpiece and I must applaud the makers of Decoded for this great job,” the Buea guest commented after watching the movie.
Shot on locations in Limbe in August 2012, Decoded is a love story that unfolds with complicated conflicts, born from a betrayal of friendship (Nicholas – Buh Proxy and Steve – Jeff Epule) until the third party, David – Van Vicker comes on board. The conflict is revolving around Jasmine, Steve’s to-be-wed wife - Solange Yijika. The rest of the story is told in the highly publicized movie which is has already hit the market and can be procured.
The Douala premiere was preceding the one of the seaside resort of Limbe in the South West region, happening at press time.

The media in Cameroon, film lovers and observers have been keen these past weeks on what is fast becoming a “jamais vue” in film circles – a Cameroonian in Bollywood movies. Sherilline Queen, in her 20s is comfortably breaking that myth. And that her example could be inspiring to aspirers is not doubtful. Sherilline who lives in Mumbai has been facilitating the work of the media by her accessibility in providing information about her strides in the world’s second biggest film industry. In a conversation with TIPTOPSTARS, the young Cameroonian revealed that her involvement with Bollywood is nothing other than dreams that takes determination and conviction to achieve.
“I love Bollywood and have always wanted to be an actor there,” she told our man. This dream was not shielded from the talented actress’ parents. Sherilline’s mum had known about it from the actress’ childhood, but it only required time to be conclusive. She had even expressed the utmost wish of becoming an Indian, but Sherilline’s mum would not be serious on child’s play.
Today, the reality of that dream is what the artist’s country is not only living, but is proud to talk about. Her skill and productivity simply fetched her a place in Bollywood. “They readily accepted me and would help when need arises, especially with scripts,” she explained. To the up-and-coming Cameroonian movie actress, language is not a big deal. She speaks hindi, even if not as well as a native speaker. “On set, they would help me with some pronunciations, but generally it works well,” Sherilline said. “It’s been a wonderful experience working with people in Bollywood and I call it a great blessing.”
The actress however stated that this breakthrough is thanks to God. “He has favoured me quite much,” she mentioned. The actress who went to school in Buea and Bamenda has featured in movies such as Kick, Yaan and Happy New Year. She is also playing in a Chidiya Ghar Lol, a TV serial. Sherilline has home in her head. “I’m planning to go back home and work with filmmakers there. I’d like to join the Cameroon film industry CFI ASAP,” she told TIPTOPSTARS. Apart from just playing in Bollywood movies, Sherilline who is a student also dances to entertain. “I do Indian dances and Hip-Hop.”
With lots of emotion, the actress urged aspiring actresses to stick on their dreams. It is by so doing, she explained, that they will get to the apex of their art. The rising movie star was special guest on Batimu FM’s Talent Promo show this Friday (26 September 2014) in an exclusive interview with Titus Banyoh. Here is the interview in its entirety.
The book industry will be one novel richer come Saturday, September 20, 2014 when The Untamed Passions of A Gifted Man officially goes public. The launching of the said novel, published by MEMA PUBLISHING and written by Cameroonian-born motivational speaker, Stanley Fongod, is billed for Columbus, the main city in the State of Ohio, USA. At his East Livingston office a week to the event, it was an excited budding novelist TIPTOPSTARS met as Fongod prepared the stage for the book launch. This great feeling, we turned to find out was obvious. “I’m quite versed with and have produced a lot of self-help literature, but this is my maiden novel experience,” the young author told TIPTOPSTARS’ editor.
Fongod further explained that he hails from a zero literature background and that he is a writer today, is just a miracle. “I have all along been a science student with certifications in IT, but with nurtured passion for writing, I found myself in the art,” said the author of the upcoming novel who is also a preacher of the gospel.
It was this passionately endless desire to write and the non-negotiable need to ferry the story’s lesson across that motivated the Los Angeles-based motivational speaker to settle on the project which was initially scripted to be filmed as a movie, but later re-adapted to a novel. “We’d planned to shoot The Untamed Passions of A Gifted Man in 2007, but the $14 to $20 million financial requirement was too cumbersome to have us venture into the project,” Fongod revealed. He went further: “If we insisted on filming the script, we were going to endure the unbearable cost of blocking a popular Los Angeles airport for instance and shooting scenes on Iraqi locations as per the story. It became non-feasible at that point.” “The only other option to keep the story alive was to adapt it to a novel which I did in something like eight months with the great assistance of Barbara who encouraged me a great deal and Dr Buma Pascal who painstakingly went through the manuscripts.”
Written in simple, clean and decodable English, The Untamed Passions of A Gifted Man presents a common, yet an unfortunate scenario of people whose heroic status is clamped down by hazardous passions they toil unsuccessfully to control. This has led to regrettable paradoxes which according to the author have placed the fame enjoyed by some personalities on the fence. Is that the fate of Allen (protagonist)in Fongod’s 202-page novel? A complete reading of the story will reveal this.
Meanwhile through the image of the story’s characters (Cameroonians- Africa), African Americans – USA) and Christians, the writer highlighted cultural diversity which he insists is a great value, especially when it dwells in unity. “That melting pot aspect The Untamed Passions of A Gifted Man is quite visible in the novel,” Fongod stated.
Inspired by The Bible,Think And Grow Rich and Paulo Coelho’s The Alchemist which the author of The Untamed Passions of A Gifted Man told us he can always be caught reading, Stanley Fongod has several works including a collection of stories, nonfictional, motivational, entrepreneurship and Christian literature. He is also an actor and highly inspired motivational speaker who was main guest on Afrikka Radio’s African Cocktail with Ernest Kanjo sometime ago. He comes back on the show this Wednesday September 17, 2014 to talk specifically about the new book and its launching which will take place at 6455 East Livingston Ave. Columbus, Ohio, 43068.

Short film rubbishes hearing defect stigma

That a person is deaf does not mean they cannot contribute to society’s development. Rather, the deaf have proven to be capable of doing unimaginable things. They have displayed skills you won’t easily associate them with, yet society would stigmatize them. It is this stigmatization that the authors of Damanu who double as producers of the upcoming Cameroonian short film are vehemently condemning in the captivating piece that is shot in Tole, a small locality near Buea, regional headquarters of the South West.
According to Ngwane Hansel, the communication officer of Zumhoo Studio Works that is producing the short film, Damaru is meant to create awareness and kill the erroneous notion that physical disability is equated to inability to function. And even when the protagonist in the film does not receive a warm treatment from society, she battles to overcome the odds and enroll in a special education programme. The rest of the story would be savoured in the 26-minutes long film directed by produced and directed by Agbor Obed Agbor with Giscard Cedrick as Director of Photography (D.O.P).
Damaru which is done in English and pidgin (lingua franca) is subtitled in English and French. Starring in the film are Christy Eka and Ngwana Hansel.
It should be noted that the lead actress in Damaru has played in several movies including the award-winning Ninah’s Dowry produced and directed by USA-based Victor Viyuoh. Meanwhile Ngwane Hansel is a comedian par excellence and runs The Good, The Bad, The Funny online TV show which is also produced by Buea-based Zumhoo Studio Works. Damaru will be officially released in September. Its trailer has been in circulation since August 22 this year.

Germany: Cameroonian diaspora life to be summed up in anticipated TV series

Thursday, 07 August 2014 16:10
Just like within other Cameroonian communities in the disapora, the one is Germany is a whole story on its own. The lives the people from this great Central African triangle live there cannot be easily summarized. It would take volumes of works (in any form) to completely tell the story. In cinema, it requires a lengthy film, segmented into countless story parts to represent Cameroonian diaspora life in Germany. The producers of Na-Ja, an upcoming TV series clearly understood this and easily went for that option.
Soon after September 6, 2014, cast and crew will start bracing to go to selected Heilbronn-German locations for the filming of some 100 episodes of the Cameroonian series that has been hugely publicized within the past couple of weeks. By then, producers of the series have told Afrikka Radio’s African Cocktail and TIPTOPSTARS respectively, the final cast of the series would have been set. “Filming of the series begins on March the 26th, 2015,” producer Wesleg Nanse announced on radio recently.
According to the Germany-based Cameroonian filmmaker, the filming of Na-Ja will run for two years. Pre-selection of the actors to feature in the series had already been done through performing videos that could be found on the Na Ja Film Production social network space.
The series which will be jointly sponsored by Challenge Camerounaise (a socio-economic and cultural platform that brings together Cameroonians in Germany), Festival Tubingen, Festival Ludwigshafen, and Umzugmitstudenten de 14, is awaited with much anxiety.
