EkieThe film industry in Cameroon became one movie richer last Saturday, June 28, 2014, following the official release of Ekei. Ekei is the much-talked about Cameroonian movie produced by Kang Quintus and Elian Mambo and directed by Akim Macauley.

Confirmed reports say the movie’s premiere that took place in Maryland Saturday was an event packed with glamour with the presence of some of people usually mentioned as influential in the industry. Spotted at the event were actress/producer Lilian Ndi, actress Trinah Takoh and Benedette Keyi.

Speaking to TIPTOPSTARS later, Kang Quintus simply said Ekei premiere was a success. “It was a wonderful premiere, we give God the glory,” said the Maryland-based producer.

Other technical crew members in the production include Christopher Okonkwo (D.O.P), Elvis Effamba (Camera Operator 1) and Penjo Baba (Camera Operator 2).

 MG 4056illegal immigrants PROJ

As scores of young Africans stream into Europe each year for further studies, so too do many of them graduate from universities there and enter the job market. After their studies, those who benefitted from a student’s visa are expected by their host countries to return home. This hardly happens. With employment uncertainty back home, many African graduants prefer to stay in Europe and struggle to make a living. Their stay automatically becomes illegal, yet, they prefer the option.

According to some of these African certificate holders, life in this status is not the best experience. It is in short, horrible!

On their part, filmmakers have been very observant and have told the story in several ways. One of them is Cameroonian-born Agbor Jenet, herself a graduate from a Swedish university. In a 98-minute-long feature film, the young African filmmaker has not only painted the gloomy picture of the horrendous life of illegal immirants in Europe, but has purposefully described the ordeal of one of them, in a bid to pass on a salient message.

Illegal Immigrants, the said movie directed by Agbor Jenet who doubles as screenplay writer, tells the story of a young Cameroonian female graduate who decides to stay in Sweden upon graduation, hoping to find a befiting job and live a good life. Her wish never becomes a horse and so there is no safari ride. She has to face the hard reality the hard way. The rest of the story is embedded in the beautifully packaged heart-broken Mix Film Productions movie filmed byDan Jåma, Lotta Skoglund, Anurin Nwunembom and Penjo Baba as Director of Photography and Camera Operator respectively and co-produced by Film I Västerbotten.

Co- directed by Tanui Paul and edited by Evans Ifeanyi with Mungwa Eric as location scout, Illegal Immigrants is said to be a must watch featuring Agbor Jenet, MPiece, KAlevi, Addy Timany, Nchifor Valery, Prince Ogugua Igwe, Amr Medhat Ibrahim, Mikael Eriksson, Christian Zea, Hans Högfeldt, Lita Roger, Susan Epede, Enow Ethel, Bareh Midred, Mbulav Sornila, Ghogomu Adela, Cham Daniel and Ayuk Sussan.

The movie will be premiered in Cameroon and in Sweden this year on a date we are still to make public,” Agbor, based in Sweden told TIPTOPSTARS.

Some months ago, the same producer completed Dilemma, a movie that focuses on the ravaging nature of HIV/AIDS and how it can be prevented.

Sierra-Leonean movies: Iconic Winstina Taylor makes great strides

tina9It is now clear that the crane bearing the lamps of the African film industry is spanning around and beaming its lights on countries other than Nigeria and Ghana. Such countries include Diamond-rich Sierra-Leone. Current observations indicate that the country which had quietly been nursing talents has broken loose and is now pumping them out into the world. Such talents span across the various areas of entertainment, notably music and movies. One of Sierra-Leone’s illustrious daughters the country now prides itself with is USA-based Winstina Taylor, actress and film producer of great repute.

Winstina who would simply be referred to as Tina shines within the African film community in the USA and is particularly admired by Cameroonian filmmakers for obvious reason. “She is a very professionally organized actress who would respect time, people and the art she knows best,” Ryan Atem, Maryland-based Cameroonian actor/comedian said of the Sierra-Leonean movie star. The comedian who told TIPTOPSTARS that he had only briefly known Tina, but had found out she was a reliably good person to work with confirmed that the actress was so work-conscious and wanted every job she is assigned with to be brilliantly done.

This has been the case with Tina’s performance in movies such as Scarlet and Nurses From Hell in which she played lead character and Agony of a Home Health Aide in which the up-and-coming Sierra-Leonean played supporting actress.

As an actress, Winstina has featured in several other movies including All Things, Unholy, Burning Love, Ekei, Deep Within, Bride’s War x3 and telefilms such as All My Father’s Children and American Mama and Family.

The young African who has an impressive business mind has ventured into movie production with resounding success. With Prime International Productions, her movie production outfit, Tina has produced works that are being distributed across Africa via Iroko TV, DStv Channel and UK nations. “Some of my movies are currently undergoing post-production. We have Red Rose, Deceptions, Deep Within, Silent Retreat and A Place in My Heart,” she told us.

The award-winning actress (laureate of the 2014 Gem of Africa Awards) who has been nominee for other African film industry recognition initiatives is a philanthropist. Amongst other things, she is engaged with helping the Sierra-Leonean community via Immaculate Charities, an organization that provides basic care assistance to the less privileged in her country.

The Maryland, USA-based actress will develop this profile on Afrikka Radio’s African Cocktail with Ernest Kanjo when she comes on board as main guest in the coming weeks.

Africa’s leading air Transportation Company, Ethiopia Airlines has accepted to sponsor a safari trip to Singapore of one of the participants at this week’s Cameroonian bloggers hang-out discussion taking place in Douala. According to organizers of Saturday’s forum to look into the practice of online writing, the lucky blogger who would be picked from a draw will be beneficiary of a round ticket, Douala-Singapore, Singapore-Douala, everything inclusive.

The lucky winner will board the airbus on Sunday June the 29th and will return on Friday July the 4th,” Adeline Sede Kamga, founder of FabAfrique Magazine and initiator of the come-together confirmed to TIPTOPSTARS a while ago. “We are really thankful to Ethiopian Airlines for this mark of confidence and support and must also laud the company’s effort in promoting communication development not just in Cameroon, but in Africa at large”.

Also speaking from Douala, Sede said her team is rounding off preparations for Saturday’s deliberations. She revealed that Internet connection, provided by CAMTEL will be available to bloggers during deliberations that will run from 3pm to 7pm at White House Restaurant situated at the Bonapriso neighborhood in Douala.

The Storm sweeps eight nominations in two instances

storm TTSThe release and recent premiere of The Storm, a Cameroonian movie written by Kenneth Ngamne, produced by Emmanuel Takusi and directed by Obed Joe seems to have brought forth more good tidings. Hardly had dust settled on the much publicized March 29, 2014 event than two other to-be events came showering the movie with what friends of the production have proudly described as immeasurable seasonal blessings – eight (8) nominations from the World Wide Independent Film Festival (WWIFF) and Nollywood and African Film Critics’ Awards (NAFCA).

It’s incredible that a young production which has not even been properly digested should pick up these number of nominations,” the movie’s writer told TIPTOPSTARS. Talking from his Minnesota base, Kenneth Ngamne went further: “It’s such a blessing that my maiden production should achieve this much. It’s the work of God. He is good!”

Amongst the eight (8) nominations, seven (7) went to the World Wide Independent Film Festival (WWIFF) which will culminated into a grand event billed for Maryland in August this year. While Best Davis will be doing his best to emerge best in the Best Supporting Actor category that also has Obi Bright as contestant, Mairo Sanda and Arnelle Wilson will be vying for the Best Supporting Actress ticket. In the Best Actress in Lead Role category, Seraphine Fon will be eyeing the prestigious Best Actress in Lead Role price while Ken Shally Monette Ngamne will be bent on bagging home the Best Actor in Lead Role statuette. The Storm director is a confident hopeful of the WWIFF Best Director prize.

I’m really proud of the nominees and the entire The Storm team, it was a great job they did,” Ngamne had told Afrikka Radio’s African Cocktail earlier. Caught in an inexplicable emotional web, the story’s author told the radio show that news of The Storm’s nomination replaced his usual daily break time meal. “In fact, my stomach is already even when I have not eaten. I’m so happy,” he said.

On the other hand, The Storm via its lead actor Ken Shally Monette Ngamne will be vying for the top place in a NAFCA 2014 Best Promising Actor category which seems to be making more news than any other category in the competition, at least as far as this edition is concerned.

It should be recalled The Storm was previewed at last year’s Golden Icons Academy Movie Awards (GIAMA) that had a huge presence of Cameroonian actors and filmmakers.

Shot and produced in the USA, The Storm, a Zonetak Studios production also features very talented Cameroonian actors including Mat Atugon and Nathalie Bih. Its premiere in Maryland was a memorable crowd-pulling event. Prior to the event, The Storm producer Emmanuel Takusi who doubles as President of the Cameroon Film Industry, CFI-USA was guest on Afrikka Radio’s African Cocktail with Ernest Kanjo.
