Just one film will be bearing Cameroon’s flag to this year’s Africa Movie Academy Awards, AMAA. Asoni, directed by Keka Sylvester has been nominated in the best film in an African language category. That is what came out at the AMAA nomination night on March 17 in Gambia’s capital Banjul. Cameroon drops from three in 2011 to one film this year – no remorse! “Though we are two films down from the three nominations we got in 2011, I must say that I still believe that our industry is growing steadily. It should be noted that this year’s AMAA judging, from the number of films the college received was highly contested. Getting a nomination is worth celebrating. Once more congratulations,” Akong Nwatum aka Damas wrote to the Cameroonian film family as he announced the 2012 AMAA nominations. He is the AMAA representative for Francophone Africa.

Last year, Cameroon grabbed her first ever AMAA prize via Ariana Astrid Atodji’s Kondi Et Le Jeudi Nationale in the best documentary category. The country had had three nominations altogether including Sunjo Petra’a Bongfen (best short film category) and The Rivaling Shadow (best actress in supporting role category).

Prior to 2011, Joyce Kuchah’s China Wahala had been nominated in the best African film in the diaspora category.

It is the hope of the country that Asoni will emerge victorious to make Cameroon proud once again. Affaire a suivre…
